Dorothy E. Amato

Dorothy Eva Amato, 90, of 489 East Main St. died yesterday morning at home. Born in Cobalt, Ontario, on May 15, 1912, daughter of Frank H. and Eva M. Harris Stockwell, she attended elementary schools in Canada. She moved with her family to North Adams in 1926 and was a 1929 graduate of Drury High School. She also graduated in 1931 from the last two-year program of the former North Adams Normal School and received her bachelor of art's degree in 1954 from its successor, the former North Adams State College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. A teacher for more than 36 years, she retired as vice principal of the former Brayton Elementary School in 1974. She also taught in Shaftsbury and Pownal, Vt., and at the former Briggsville Elementary School in Clarksburg. Mrs. Amato was a 78-year member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She also was active in its Guild and served as secretary. She was a member of the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association and an associated member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She leaves her husband, Harold R. Amato, whom she married Jan. 19, 1946; a son, Brian Amato of Hollidaysburg, Pa.; a sister, Mary A. Boisvert of North Adams; and two granddaughters. Predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Marjorie Pead and Alfred and Norman Stockwell. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 1 in St. John's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Donald G. Place, rector. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours at AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, North Adams, will be Friday, today, from 6 to 8. The family requests the omission of flowers and suggests memorial donations be made to the Dora Radlo Scholarship Fund or St. John's Church Memorial Fund, through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247.
