John Albert Heaton

John Albert Heaton, 81, of 29 Morewood Drive died yesterday morning at home. He was manager of the Pittsfield Municipal Airport for 40 years, retiring in 1985. Born in Eaton Rapids, Mich., on Dec. 14, 1920, son of Thomas E. and Elsie T. Bandlow Heaton, he attended Pittsfield High School and was a 1939 graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy. He attended Boston University, where he received his pilot's license, but left to accept a commission in the Navy. A Navy veteran of World War II, he taught flying to cadets for two years and spent a year on anti-submarine patrol. He was a communicant of St. Teresa's Church and a member of the Rotary Club of Pittsfield. He and his wife, the former Marian G. Messer, celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary June 22. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, John E. Heaton of Pittsfield; three daughters, Marian B. "Mimi" Dolphin of Pittsfield, Nancy E. Rossin of Pittsfield and Julie Heaton-Borey of Denver; a sister, Joan Phiel of Lanesboro, and seven grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- John Albert Heaton, who died Sunday, Aug. 25, also leaves seven grandchildren, John M., Jeffrey A., Justin P. and Jillian A. Heaton, Todd M. and Tracey L. Dolphin, and Christopher J. Rossin. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Heaton, and a sister, Elsie Carpenter. The funeral will be Thursday, Aug. 29, at 10:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Teresa's Church. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
