Dorothy Gladys Astorino

Dorothy Gladys Astorino, 87, of 611 State Road, former 60-year resident of 107 River St., died Monday at North Adams Commons. Born in Adams on Dec. 12, 1914, daughter of Andrew and Lena Ruhm Schramm, she moved to North Adams at an early age and attended schools there. She graduated from Drury High School in 1932. Mrs. Astorino was first employed by the Wall-Streeter Shoe Co. She later was employed part time at the former John Shand Meat Market on River Street, and performed expert seamstress work for many clients. In the 1950s, she was a bookkeeper for Roberts Co. Clothing and, by 1960, was employed in the accounting office of Sprague Electric Co. until retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. John's Church and St. John's Guild. She taught Sunday School at the church and was a member of its Young People's Fellowship and its Vestry. She was also a member of the Sprague Retirees Club, the Sprague Office Gold Card Club, the Eva Booth Club of the Salvation Army and the Stamford (Vt.) Senior Citizens. She served as a senior aide at the Magic Seasons Day Care Center at the former Mark Hopkins School. Her husband, Louis W. Astorino, whom she married May 29, 1940, died in April 1948. She leaves a daughter, Verne Bosworth of Williamstown; a son, Louis W. Astorino Jr. of Tiverton, R.I.; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral will be Friday at 11:15 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Services at noon at St. John's Episcopal Church in North Adams, celebrated by the Rev. Donald Place, rector. Burial in Southview Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Donations to St. John's Church in care of the funeral home. Survivors include five grandchildren, Charles Bosworth III of Sunderland, Kathleen Gagne of Adams, Jennifer Bosworth of North Adams, Stacy Congdon of Providence, R.I., and Steven W. Astorino of Tiverton, R.I.; three great-grandchildren, Alexandria Brandon, Dylan Gagne and Courtney Gagne; four nephews, and one cousin, Elmer Kiontke of Lanesboro. A sister, Helen Schramm, died in infancy, and a granddaughter, Mary Kathleen Bosworth, died in infancy.
