Joseph M. Casey

Joseph M. Casey, 92, of 530 Main St., a longtime town official, died yesterday at Fairview Hospital. Born in Great Barrington on June 26, 1910, son of Michael and Delia Cleary Casey, he was a 1927 graduate of the former Searles High School. He also studied and worked in Washington, D.C., from 1927-29. He was a member of the Great Barrington Board of Registrars from 1935-74. Earlier, he had been an assistant probation officer and clerk pro-tem for Southern Berkshire District Court from 1931-35 and the Fire District in Great Barrington from 1935-41. From 1941 until 1974, he was the town clerk, treasurer and accounting officer. He ran a local bowling alley in Great Barrington and was a member of the Democratic State Committee in the 1960s. An avid and accomplished golfer, he managed the Barrington School Golf Course at Searles Castle and was a past member at Wyantenuck Country Club. Mr. Casey was a communicant of St. Peter's Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Mount Everett Council 513. He also worked at the former Great Barrington Fair in the parimutuel department. He leaves his wife, the former Irene M. Carrier, whom he married May 26, 1941, in St. Anne's Church in Waterbury, Conn.; two daughters, Patricia White of Great Barrington and Mary Ann Croker of New Market, N.H.; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Joseph M. Casey, who died Sept. 3, 2002, will be Friday, Sept. 6, at 9 from BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Peter's Church with the Rev. Daniel Papineau, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Thursday from 5 to 7. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to St. Peter's Ramp Fund or to the Special Olympics, Berkshire Chapter, c/o Birches-Roy Funeral Home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He was predeceased by a grandson, Keith C. White, and two sisters, Marcella Wallace and Mary Casey.
