Nancy Barnett

Nancy Barnett, 95, formerly a resident of Castle Hill Road, died Friday at Timberlyn Heights Nursing and Alzheimer’s Center. Born in Beaver, Pa., on Sept. 27, 1906, daughter of Charles and Lucy Kurtz Barnett, she moved with her family to Great Barrington in 1912, when her father became manager of the former Brookside Estate. She attended local schools and graduated in 1924 from the former Searles High School and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College in Northampton in 1918. She resided in New York City, Piermont, N.Y., and in Rockland County, N.Y., before returning to Great Barrington after her retirement. Ms. Barnett was employed in the publishing business and related fields from 1928 until retiring in 1966. She was active in choral music groups and for many years was a member of the choir of First Congregational Church. In her later years, she became involved in environmental activities and was a member of many conservation organizations, including serving as chairman of the Great Barrington Conservation Commission for five years and as a trustee and part-time executive secretary of the Berkshire-Litchfield Environmental Council for many years. She also was active in the Appalachian and Adirondack mountain club. She leaves her close friends, Warren and Barbara Syer, and David, Betty and Morgan Vigneron. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Ms. Nancy Barnett of Great Barrington died Sept. 20, 2002. She leaves her close friends, Barbara and Warren Syer, and Betty, Morgan and David Vigneron. A memorial service will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Charles G. VanAusdall, pastor of First Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Nancy’s memory may be made to the Organ Fund of First Congregational Church through the funeral home. Remembrances and memories may be sent to finnerty@bcn.net.
