Betsey Camp

Betsey Camp, 79, of Elephant Rock Road died yesterday at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. Born in Great Barrington on Sept. 1, 1923, daughter of Walter Sherman Whitestone and Beulah Taggart Whitestone Peacock, she attended the one-room schoolhouse in Monterey, St. Mary's School in Burlington, N.J., and graduated in 1940 from Northfield Mount Herman School. She graduated in 1944 from the former Beaver College, now Arcardia College, in Philadelphia and received her master's degree in education from the University of Buffalo at Lockport, N.Y., in 1964. Mrs. Camp was a lifelong summer resident of Monterey. She retired to Delray Beach, Fla., in 1977 have previously lived in Derry, N.H., Williamsville, N.Y., and Maywood, N.J. She was a physical education teacher for 21 years at Beaver College, Amherst (N.Y.) Junior High School and Riverdell and Dwight Morrow high schools, both in New Jersey. She retired in 1977 from the Manchester (N.H.) School District. She enjoyed swimming and knitting. Her husband of 43 years, John T. "Jack" Camp II, died Feb. 2, 1989. She leaves a daughter, Jessica C. Duke of Lenox; two sons, John T. Camp III of Glen Rock, N.J., and James T. Camp of Stafford, Va.; a brother, W.S. Peter Whitestone of Dalton; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mrs. Betsey Whitestone Camp of Monterey died Sept. 21, 2002. Besides her children, she leaves her son-in-law, Frank Duke; her daughters-in-law, Patricia Camp and Linda Camp; six grandchildren, Christopher and Daniel Duke, Jennifer Dalessio and John T. Camp IV, Mark A. Camp and James T. Camp Jr., and six great-grandchildren, Kayla, Alexis, Grace, Seth, Ashton and Quinn. The funeral will be conducted Monday, Sept. 23, at 10 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Catherine Wood Richardson. Burial will follow in Corashire Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in Betsey's memory may be made to Fairview Hospital, the Alzheimer's Foundation or the American Cancer Society through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
