Michael V. Canger Sr.

Michael V. Canger Sr., 81, of Naples, Fla., died Friday at the home of his son, Leo Canger, of Clayton Road, Clayton. Born in Paterson, N.J., on June 10, 1921, son of James and Adeline Madama Canger, he was raised by his father and stepmother, Theresa, after his mother's death. He attended schools in New Jersey and graduated from high school in Totowa. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a tech sergeant and scout. He also served in the Paterson National Guard for a year. He was president of Canger Construction in Paterson until his retirement in 1975, whereupon he moved to Naples. While in Paterson, he was a National Rifle Association and police firearms instructor. He was also a special-duty police officer. A hunter and fisherman, he served as president of Passaic County Fish and Game Club in 1966. He and his wife, the former Catherine Massey, were married Aug. 14, 1943, at St. Peter's Church in Pleasantville, N.J. Besides his wife and son, he leaves two other sons, Michael V. Canger Jr. of Groton, N.Y., and Edward Canger of Post Falls, Idaho; a sister, Claire DeLuccia of Manahawken, N.J.; a brother, Ralph "Bob" Canger of California; 10 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two daughters, Donna Canger and Joan DelTufo Bacigalupo. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Michael V. Canger Sr., 81, died Nov. 29, 2002, at the home of his son, Leo Canger, in Clayton, Mass. Cherished grandfather of Bobby, Denise, Michael III, Kristin, Karly, Brooke, Lee, Anthony, Nicholas; loving great-grandfather of Steven, CJ, Bobby Jr., Katelyn, Kersten and Peyten Emma. He was predeceased by two daughters, Donna Canger and Joan DelTufo Bacigalupo, and his granddaughter, Lisa. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated tomorrow, Dec. 3, at noon at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield by the Rev. John Lis, pastor. The family will receive friends tomorrow from 10:30 to 11:30 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington.
