William Harry Salavantis

William Harry Salavantis, 53, of 119 Yorkshire Drive died Wednesday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield after a long illness. Born in North Adams on Jan. 6, 1949, a son of John and Lillian Shafter Salavantis, he was a 1968 graduate of McCann Technical School. Mr. Salavantis was employed as a dry-side operator at Specialty Minerals Inc. in Adams for 26 years, retiring in 2001 because of ill health. From 1970 to 1974, he was employed as a laborer for J.A. Jones Construction at Bear Swamp in Rowe. He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church and had been a member of the Massachusetts Umpires Association since 1991. He held a fourth-degree black belt from the Okinawan Karate School in Pittsfield. He enjoyed working with children involved in baseball and karate, as well as ice skating, rollerblading and gardening. He leaves his wife, the former Christine K. Belini, whom he married on May 29, 1971. He also leaves a son, William M. Salavantis, and a daughter, Kimberly A. Salavantis, both of Cheshire; a brother, John Salavantis of Grimsby, Ontario; five sisters, Janice Chenail of Heartwellville, Vt., Judith Dominguez of Glendale, Calif., Nancy Salmon of Worcester, Linda Alonso of Miramar, Fla., and Dale Medina of Ocala, Fla. FUNERAL NOTICE -- William Harry Salavantis, who died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, was predeceased by a sister, Debra Sutton of North Adams, who died March 23, 1986. He also leaves his dog, Mandy. A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Salavantis will be celebrated tomorrow, Dec. 28, at 11:30 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Cheshire by the Rev. David Raymond, pastor. Burial will be in the spring in Cheshire Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Dec. 27, from 5 to 8 at DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Salavantis may be made for glioblastoma research in care of the funeral home, 121 North State Road, Cheshire, MA 01225.
