Helen Woodbeck Rote

Helen Woodbeck Rote, 87, of County Road died Wednesday at Noble Nursing Home in Salisbury, where she had resided since May 1997. A native of Sheffield, she was born at home on Dec. 1, 1915, daughter of Harry and Carrie Smith Chapin. She was a graduate of the former Sheffield High School. Mrs. Rote attended Old Parish Church. She was a member of the Thursday Morning Club, the Sheffield Historical Society and the Sheffield Friendly Union, and a volunteer at the former This and That VNA Shop in Great Barrington. Her first husband, Russell C. Woodbeck, died in 1971. They had been married 37 years. Her husband, Lewis Rote Sr., whom she married in 1978, died in 1993. She leaves five daughters, Barbara Herbs of Canaan, N.Y., Sara Gannon of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Carolyn Wilkinson of New Marlboro, and Helen Johnston and Nancy W. Smith, both of Sheffield; a stepson, Lewis Rote Jr. of Sheffield; two stepdaughters, Norma Novicki of Ashley Falls and Elizabeth Smith of Sheffield; 14 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Helen Woodbeck Rote died Dec. 25, 2002. She was predeceased by her sister, Alice Streeter Hurlburt. The funeral will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 4, at noon at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington by the Rev. Arthur Kaufman. The family will receive friends from 11 until the time of the service.
