James E. Leffingwell

James E. Leffingwell, 90, of Leffingwell Road, Southfield, died Tuesday morning at home. Born on the family farm in Southfield on April 4, 1912, son of Ernest J. and L. Dowd Leffingwell, he attended local schools. He and two of his brothers, Joseph and Levi, developed their father's farm into one of the largest in New Marlboro.They retired in 1978, but continued farming as a hobby. His brothers predeceased him. He was a former member of the North Canaan (Conn.) Congregational Church and the American Dairy Society. He and his brothers were presented an award for their conservation practices in 1966 from the Berkshire Conservation District. His family has resided on Leffingwell Road since the 1870s. He enjoyed spending time with family and pets. He leaves cousins, nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for James E. Leffingwell will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 11, at 11 at North Canaan Congregational Church by the Rev. Barbara Schenk. Burial will follow in Corashire Cemetery in Monterey. The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 10, from 3 until 6 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. He leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews. Three brothers, Lewis, Levi and Joseph Leffingwell, and three sisters, Clara Knight, Elizabeth Tinker and Lucy Witruk, predeceased him. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Marlboro First Responders through the funeral home, 476 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
