Gertrude M. Flaherty

Gertrude M. Flaherty, 88, of 505 Union St. died Wednesday evening at North Adams Commons, where she was admitted Jan. 7. Born in North Adams on May 11, 1914, daughter of Frank and Gertrude Ashline Caron, she was a graduate of the former Notre Dame Grammar and Commercial High School. She also graduated from the former Bliss Business College in North Adams. She was last employed as an administrative assistant in the Parish of Notre Dame, retiring in 1994. She worked for more than 20 years in the Admission Department at North Adams Regional Hospital until 1984. She had also worked at the former Hoosac Cotton Mills and the former Sprague Electric Co., both in North Adams. A lifelong communicant of Notre Dame Church, Mrs. Flaherty was active in church activities, including volunteering in bingo, the kitchen and bazaars. She was a member of the Psalm Tones Church Choir and a member of the St. Martha's Funeral Choir. She enjoyed knitting and cats. She would often knit items for schoolchildren in the winter. Her husband, William A. Flaherty, whom she married Nov. 28, 1944, died Jan. 23, 1981. She leaves two sons, John F. Flaherty of Williamstown and William L. Flaherty of North Adams, and two grandsons. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Gertrude M. Caron Flaherty will take place Saturday at 8:15 at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested for the Berkshire Humane Society or to the North Adams Public Library Fund through the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247. Survivors also include daughter-in-law, Frances Flaherty, and two grandsons, Shawn Flaherty and Timothy Flaherty. She was predeceased by a brother, Francis Caron.
