Leona Esther Porter Anderson

Leona Esther Porter Anderson, 83, of 487 Union St., died Thursday evening at the Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Williamstown on March 17, 1919, daughter of Richard Lansing and Lila Davis Porter, she attended Williamstown Elementary School before moving to North Adams in 1930. She graduated from Drury High School in 1938. She was a well-known "Avon lady," selling Avon cosmetic products in the area for more than 41 years. She was a member of the Avon Presidents Club. She was last employed with the Green Thumb Program as a clerk in the North Adams elementary school special-needs department. Earlier, she was employed at the former Sprague Electric Co., was a census taker for the city of North Adams and also served as a poll worker during city elections. She attended the First Baptist Church. Her former husband, George P. Anderson Jr., died April 25, 1980. She leaves a son, George Peter Anderson III of Lanesboro; three daughters, Barbara Vandenburgh of North Adams, Marion A. Powell of New London, Pa., and Susan A. Sleets of Laverock, Pa.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services will be held at 1 Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, in the Sherman-Burbank Memorial Chapel, Williamstown. The Rev. Willard Durant, retired, will officiate. Burial will be in the spring in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. Visiting hours at the AUGÉ-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME will be from 2 to 4 on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory be made to the United Negro College Fund, through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247.
