Eleanor Cowles Gellhorn

Eleanor Cowles Gellhorn, 98, of Melborne Place, Pittsfield, formerly of the Knoll, Stockbridge, died on December 3, 2000. Born in Plainville, CT on September 3, 1902, she was the daughter of Clinton W., and Elizabeth C. Atwood Cowles. Mrs. Gellhorn spent the early years of her life growing up in Springfield, MA. She graduated from the Bradford Academy, class of 1922. She was married to Edward Tiffany VanDeusen in 1922 and to George Gellhorn, Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri in 1934. She traveled with him extensively throughout Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Far and Middle East, and Australia. Mrs. Gellhorn is the author of the McKay guide books to the Far East and Hawaii, the Middle East, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas. She also contributed to the four volume World Travels book set published by Doubleday. When living in Brazil, Mrs. Gellhorn, compiled an English-Portuguese cookbook. Her first job was compiling an art catalogue for the Hispanic Society Museum in New York. When living in Stockbridge she was on the Board of the Elderly, and also with the herb group at the Stockbridge Garden Center. She was affiliated with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Stockbridge, and was one of the group of knitters for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, in Pittsfield. Mrs. Eleanor C. Gellhorn is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Resnik and a son-in-law, David Resnik of Stockbridge, two grand daughters, Kim and Anna; a great grand daughter, Sarah; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Alfred Gellhorn. Two sisters, Elizabeth Westervelt and Katherine Hale and two beloved grandchildren, Katherine, and Christopher Resnik have predeceased her. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday December 23, 2000 at ten a.m., at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Stockbridge, with the Rev. John Tarrant, officiating. There are no calling hours. Those who desire may make memorial contributions in Eleanor C. Gellhorn’s memory to the Stockbridge Library in memory of her late beloved granddaughter Katherine Resnik and grandson Christopher Resnik, or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, or the Lee Visiting Nurse Association in care of the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230
