Marian Ruth Holmes

Marian Ruth Holmes, 83, formerly of Cheshire, died Tuesday at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility in Pittsfield, where she had resided for two years. Born in Philadelphia on May 15, 1920, daughter of Thomas and Irene English Marshall, she graduated from Overbrook High School and the Women's Homeopathic Hospital School of Nursing, both in Pennsylvania. She had resided in Cheshire for 25 years, then in Maine for 30 years. A registered nurse, Mrs. Holmes had worked private duty at the former Plunkett Hospital in Adams. She had been a member of Cheshire Baptist Church, where she was active in the Women's League, taught Sunday school and read a children's story every Sunday. She also was a member of the Cheshire Women's Club. While in Waterboro, Maine, she was a member of North Waterboro (Maine) Community Baptist Church, was active as a hospice worker and worked at the Good Neighbor, a supplier of clothing to the needy. She and her husband, the Rev. Chandler M. Holmes, pastor of Cheshire Baptist Church from 1945 to 1969, were married Aug. 25, 1943. Besides her husband of Pittsfield, she leaves three daughters, Susan Brady of Wilbraham, Leslie LaPlante of Hinsdale and Carolyn Gawron of Scarboro, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Marian R. Holmes, who died Feb. 17, 2004, will be conducted Friday at 2 at First Baptist Church of Cheshire by the Rev. Linda Shaw, pastor, and the Rev. William D. Furey, pastor of Berkshire Union Chapel of Lanesboro. Burial will be in Elder Grey Cemetery, North Waterboro, Maine, in the spring. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church from 1 to 2. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association, both in care of DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME, 121 North State Road, Cheshire, MA 01225, which is handling local arrangements. On Monday, Feb. 23, the family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 2 at North Waterboro (Maine) Community Baptist Church. Services will follow at 2 under the direction of HEALD FUNERAL HOME, 580 Main St., Springvale, Maine. Survivors include three sons-in-law, Bruce Brady, Robert LaPlante and Stanley Gawron, and 23 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas Marshall and Edwin Marshall, and two sisters, Beatrice Marshall and Loretta David.
