Dixon Hall Daniels

Dixon Hall Daniels, 79, of 7 Daniels Ave. died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital. He was a longtime Adams businessman and civic leader. Born in Adams on Sept. 30, 1921, son of Rupert B. and Marjorie Wellington Daniels, he graduated from the former Adams High School in 1939 and received his bachelor of arts degree in history in 1943 from Dartmouth College. While at Adams High School, he was a three-letter athlete, playing baseball, football and basketball. He was also a member of the Dartmouth baseball team. A veteran of World War II, he served with the Marine Corps in the Pacific theater. He was wounded during the invasion of the island of Peleliu, and received the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant. He was vice president and treasurer of the former L.L. Brown Paper Co. in Adams, which was operated by his family for several generations. After the mill closed in 1973, he worked as an assistant to the president of the former Arnold Print Works in Adams for several years. He was later self-employed. Active in civic affairs for many years, Mr. Daniels was the past chairman of the Adams Personnel Board, and a longtime town meeting member. He was a member of the Hoosac Valley Regional High School Building Committee, past president of the Adams Lions Club and past president of the Northern Berkshire Council of the Boy Scouts of America. An outstanding golfer, he was a member and former club champion at the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown. His greatest achievement was winning four consecutive allied championships at four different golf courses in 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1962. He was also a medalist in the State Golf Championship, and had also won four husband/wife state championships with his wife, Peggy. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. Mr. Daniels was a member and past moderator of First Congregational Church in Adams and a member of its choir. He leaves his wife of 51 years, the former Margarett "Peggy" Head, whom he married June 18, 1949; two daughters, Deborah H. Daniels of North Adams and Pamela Daniels Drumheller of Potomac, Md; a son, Dixon "Skip" Daniels of Cheshire; a brother, R. Wellington Daniels of Wayne, N.J.; a sister, Virginia Daniels Wall of Williamstown; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 at First Congregational Church, Park Street (Route 8) in Adams. The Rev. John T. Carrick, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be private in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Memorial calling hours at AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., will be Thursday from 5 to 7. Memorial donations may be made to First Congregational Church Memorial Fund through the funeral home.
