Walter J. Bossidy

Walter J. Bossidy, 57, of Summer Street died Tuesday at home. Born in Great Barrington on May 17, 1943, son of Walter R. and Mary Bush Bossidy, he attended Lee schools and was a 1961 graduate of Lee High School. He then attended St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Mr. Bossidy served in the Navy for two years as a corpsman. He received the Purple Heart, the Navy Cross, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Fleet Marine Force Combat Insignia and the Cross of Gallantry with Palm Frond while serving in Vietnam. After his military service, he attended Berkshire Community College and Fitchburg State College, from which he received his bachelor's degree in education in 1971 and his master's degree in special education from 1974. Mr. Bossidy taught fifth grade at Applewild School in Fitchburg and then at Westminster Elementary School in Westminster. He then was a learning disabilities specialist in Lunenberg Public Schools. He also taught fifth and sixth grade at Hawthorne Brook Middle School in Townsend from 1978 until retiring in 1996. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. He enjoyed gardening, whale watching and gourmet cooking. He leaves a daughter, Kathleen M. Bossidy of Ashby; a sister, Shauneen Bossidy of Ashland, and his former wife, the former Deborah A. Scaduto of Ashby. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Church in Lee. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lee. Visiting hours will be at the KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. and again on Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friends wishing may make donations to St. Mary's School Library Fund or to the North Middlesex Regional High School Scholarship Fund in care of the Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.

Walt's father Walter Bossidy Sr who was chief of police took me when I was in High School to get my drivers license. I remember when he would bring his son and daughter in to my fathers store.
