Wilfred "Pete" Asselin

Wilfred "Pete" Asselin, 90, of 56 Glendale Road died Saturday at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center. He died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Oct. 19 in Columbia County, N.Y. Born in Chicopee Falls on April 13, 1914, son of Joseph and Louise Lariviere Asselin, he was a 1932 graduate of Chicopee High School. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he also served during the Korean and Vietnam wars in the Air Force. He worked on military vehicles, including airplanes, in Japan, California, France, Greenland, Korea and Vietnam. He left active duty in 1968 after being wounded and served in the reserve. After retiring from the service, Mr. Asselin moved to Housatonic, where he opened Pete's Fix It Shop. He was a communicant of Corpus Christi Church and served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the Stockbridge Special Police Force, a past commander of the Housatonic VFW and a member of the Stockbridge VFW. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Housatonic the Beautiful Com-mittee and an active member of the Friends of Chesterwood. He enjoyed participating in antique car shows, receiving many trophies over the years, and was a judge at car shows at Chesterwood. His wife, the former Lillian Mayo, whom he married June 18, 1938, in St. Patrick's Church in Chicopee Falls, died July 8, 2002. He leaves three nieces and a nephew. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Wilfred "Pete" Asselin, who died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, will be Thursday, Nov. 4, at 9 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Corpus Christi Church celebrated by the Rev. Anthony Jutt, pastor. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Bridget's Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Pete's memory may be made to the Corpus Christi Building Fund, c/o the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He leaves a nephew, Gerald Asselin, and his wife, Marilyn, of Naples, Fla., and three nieces, Lorraine Asselin of Boston, Claire Lariviere and her husband, John, of Chicopee, and Rita Banister of Chicopee. He also leaves his constant and faithful companion, his dog Tony.
