Kenneth S. "Murph" Brown Sr

Kenneth S. "Murph" Brown Sr., 87, of 223 Washington Mountain Road died yesterdayat Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 29, 1916, son of George L. and Katherine G. Doyle Brown, he was educated in Pittsfield schools. He lived in Lenox Dale from the early 40s until moving to Lee in 1953. During World War II, Mr. Brown was employed by Railroad Express in Pittsfield. In the late 1940s, he worked for Kimball Motor Dispatch in Great Barrington. In 1950, he worked for Brown's Express in Pittsfield. He retired in 1979 from the former Red Star Express as a truck driver. In the 1980s, he was a crossing guard at Lee Central School. His first wife, the former Mildred Carty, died April 8, 1946. His wife, the former Ellen F. O'Brien, whom he married Oct. 16, 1948, died Feb. 27, 1999. He leaves four sons, Richard J. Brown of Pittsfield, Daniel J. Brown of Tracy, Calif., David E. Brown of Lee and Michael J. Brown of Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Katherine G. Hoyt of Ancram, N.Y., and Maureen E. Baran of North Adams; two sisters, Cordelia Dietlin of Pittsfield and Eleanor Weldon of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A son, Kenneth S. Brown Jr., died in 1993. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Kenneth "Murph" Brown will be held Friday at 10 at the KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee with the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor of St. Vincent dePaul Church in Lenox Dale, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Thursday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to Hospice Care in the Berkshires or the Lee Ambulance Squad in care of the funeral home, 3 Main St., Lee 01238. Murph leaves grandsons, Rick and Mark Brown, D.J., Bob, Scott and Kevin Brown, Peter and Bryan Brown, Corey Brown and Matthew Baran; his granddaughters Meghan Brown and Moria Brown; his great-grandson, Cameron Brown, and his great-granddaughters, Mackenzie, Caylee and Hannah Brown. He also leaves his daughters-in-law, Virginia, Eileen, Robin and Louise Brown, and his sons-in-law, Elwood Hoyt and Jerry Baran. His beloved Red Sox gave Murph a great send-off.
