Helen Mary (Sands) Waterhouse

Helen Mary (Sands) Waterhouse, 95, of One Berkshire Place, Adams, died Friday morning in North Adams Regional Hospital. She had been admitted to the hospital April 26th after suffering a fracture following a fall. Mrs. Waterhouse was born in Savoy, MA on Mar. 29th, 1906 of parents William Sands & 0ra Brunell Sands. The family relocated to Adams when she was an infant and later established a home in Newark, N. J. when she was 4 yrs of age. The family returned to Adams in 1917. Her education was in Newark and also at the former Liberty St. School and Adams High school, both in the Mother Town. She was a graduate of the High School and a member of its ’ Class of ‘23. Mrs. Waterhouse was the administrator for many years of the Smith Brothers Insurance Agency located first on Center St. and later on Park St. in Adams. She retired from the firm in 1981 after 48 years of service. A member of the First Congregational Church in Adams, she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years; The Churchs ’ Womens Society and she was an instructor in the Churchs ’ Sunday School, also for many years. She was a member of The Kings Daughters and the Adams Arts & Crafts Guild. Mrs. Waterhouse exchanged marriage vows with the late William Sanford Sands on Dec. 8th, 1947 in the Congregational Church in the Town. The rite was administered by Rev. Hawley. Mr. Samds passed on Dec. 6, 1990. She is survived by cousins, of which Edward A. Recchia of Adams was her faithful careraker. Another cousin in Westminster, CA., Kenneth Young also survives, along with Sirkka Kulush of Adams. A sister, Lorena Potter predeceased her Oct. 7. 1998. A funeral service for will be offered Monday, May 7th at 1 p.m. in the First Congregational Church of Adams. The service will be presented by its’ Pastor, Rev John T. Carrick. Burial will follow the service in Maple St. Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours will be Sunday from 6:30 to 8 P.M. in the McBride Funeral Home, 6 Liberty St., Adams.
