Carolyn F. Westwood

Carolyn F. Westwood, 78, of 154 Windsor Bush Road, died Monday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston of complications following heart surgery in March. Born in Boston on Feb. 19, 1923, daughter of the Rev. Harold G. and Helen H. Freeman Arnold, she graduated from Beaver Country Day School in Brooklinein 1941. She attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., and Bennington College, from which she graduated in 1945. She married the Rev. Arnold F. Westwood in 1945 and lived in Brewster; Urbana, Ill.; Westport, Conn.; Cleveland, and Manchester, Conn., before moving to Windsor year-round in 1973, having been a summer resident since 1961. With her husband, she operated Windfields Farm Bed and Breakfast since 1983. Mrs. Westwood was a grower of organic vegetables and flowers and producer of maple syrup. Over the course of 26 years, she received more than 200 first prizes for her exhibits in the Agricultural Hall at the Cummington Fair, including four blue ribbons for maple syrup. She was a member of the Massachusetts Maple Syrup Producers Association, the Hillside Agricultural Society and a member and past officer of the Hampshire Hills Bed and Breakfast Association. She served as clerk of The Friends of Windsor Inc. from its inception in 1984 until this year. She served a term as Windsor community representative on the Berkshire Trail Elementary School Council. She was a life member of the Boston Athenaeum. An ardent nature lover and conservationist, Mrs. Westwood served on the Advisory Committee for the Notchview Reservation and served on the Windsor Conservation Commission. The Massachusetts Audubon Society honored her with a life membership in 1988. An amateur poet, Mrs. Westwood's poetry was read at the Poetry Slam at the annual Homecoming Celebration in Windsor and has been privately published. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sisters, Harriet McKissock of Rowayton, Conn., and Phoebe Rankin of South Dartmouth; three sons, John F. Westwood and Harold A. Westwood, both of Plainfield, and Jefferson Westwood of Fredonia, N.Y.; one daughter, Phoebe Bushway of Plainfield, and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held June 30 at a time to be announced at the West Cummington Congregational Church. Internment of ashes will be private.
