Angelo "Sal" Sorrentino

Angelo "Sal" Sorrentino, 86, of 145 Old Pleasant St. died Saturday evening at home after a long battle with cancer. Born in Lee on Aug. 2, 1918, son of Cosimo and Ignatia "Nancy" Navarro Sorrentino, he was a 1937 graduate of Lee High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a sergeant in the infantry in the European-African-Middle East theater. He was wounded in France and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Mr. Sorrentino was employed by the former Marland Mold in Pittsfield, retiring in 1973 with 32 years of service. He also worked part time at Richwell Mold & Tool Co. for eight years, until 1987. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and longtime member of Bossidy-Crerar Post 893 Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served as commander for several years and as all-state commander. He was a former member of the Sons of Italy Itam Lodge 564 in Pittsfield. He also coached Little League for several years and was a member of the Senior Golf League at Greenock Country Club, and of the Senior Bowling leagues at Cove Lanes in Great Barrington and at Lee Lanes. He enjoyed OTB and playing cards. He assisted with the organization of the annual Lee Memorial Day parades and with the building of the VFW hall on Route 102. He and his wife, the former Georgette Mermet, would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Oct. 13. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Linda M. Rilla and Sally A. Cornwell, both of Pittsfield; a sister, Mary Keenan of Pittsfield; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Angelo J. Sorrentino will be tomorrow, July 12, at 9:15 a.m. from KELLY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Visiting hours will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends wishing may make memorial donations to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in c/o the funeral home, 3 Main St., Lee MA 01238. He leaves his grandchildren, Michael, Thomas, Wendy, Cynthia, Willow and Dirck, and his great-grandchildren, Alex and Jordan. He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and James "Sitzo" Sorrentino, and by his sisters Virginia Archambeault and Mabel Salvatore.
