Frances B. Dewey

Frances B. Dewey, 82, of Salisbury Street, Worcester, formerly of Williamstown, died Saturday at home after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Providence, R.I., on July 7, 1923, daughter of Norman B. and Dorothy Briggs Smith, she was a 1941 graduate of the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Conn., and a graduate of Katharine Gibbs School in Boston. In 1978, Mrs. Dewey opened The Cow Bell, a needlepoint shop, which she operated until moving to Worcester in 1981. She volunteered at the Women's Exchange and with the elderly for many years. She enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening. She was a member of First Unitarian Church in Worcester. While in Williamstown, she was a member of First Congregational Church. She and her husband, Francis H. "Chuck" Dewey, former vice president/treasurer of Williams College, were married March 4, 1950. Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, Stephen Dewey of Grafton, Morgan Dewey of Worcester and David Dewey of Williamstown; a daughter, Nancy Dewey of Deer Isle, Maine; a brother, Stephen B. Smith of Norwell, and 11 grandchildren, FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Frances B. Dewey, who died July 16, 2005, will be held Thursday, July 21, at 11 at First Unitarian Church, 90 Main St., Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Washburn House, 1183 Main St., Worcester, MA 01603, or to the Centerville Public Library, 585 Main St., Centerville, MA 02632. CASWELL-KING FUNERAL DIRECTORS in Worcester is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Frani believed in the goodness of all people and provided joyous support to those she encountered.
