Elda Ptacek

Elda Ptacek, 87, of Albany, N.Y., mother of Margaret Markham of Lee, died Wednesday at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Born in Howe's Cave, N.Y., daughter of Fred and Margaret Hays, she received her master's degree from New York State College for Teachers in Albany, majoring in mathematics. Mrs. Ptacek studied accounting at Albany Business College and was offered a teaching position there when World War II started. She taught from 1942 to 1971. She then served as college accountant until 1983. She was a member of Pine Grove Methodist Church in Colonie, N.Y., where she had taught Sunday school since 1960, and a member of its United Methodist Women's Group. She served as president of the Women's Group twice and several times as treasurer. She was also a member of Herbert Kuhn Senior Center in Colonie. In 2004, she received the Senior Lifetime Achievement Award of Albany and Rensselaer counties. She and her husband, Edwin Ptacek, were married seven years until his death. Besides her daughter, she leaves two stepdaughters, Luella Smith of Scotland, Pa., and Carol Kerwin of Phoenix; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Elda Hays Ptacek, 87, will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Central Avenue, Albany. Calling hours will be tomorrow, Aug. 21, from 4 to 8 at NEW COMER-CANNON FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Route 155, south of Central Avenue). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 1580 Central Ave., Albany, NY 12205, in memory of Elda H. Ptacek. Survivors include a son-in-law, David Markham, and three grandchildren, Deanna, Michael and Amy.
