Alfred J. Rettie

Alfred J. Rettie, 77, a resident of the Soldier's Home in Holyoke, died there yesterday. He formerly lived at 15 Brierwood Lane. Born in Springfield on May 3, 1924, son of Alexander M. and Louisa Anderson Rettie, he moved to Northampton at the age of 4 and graduated from Northampton High School in 1941 and from the University of Massachusetts in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in engineering. A World War II Navy veteran, he served as a radioman and gunner on a PBY in the Pacific theater. Mr. Rettie was employed by Associated Engineers of Agawam for eight years and by GE as a technical writer in the ordnance department. He retired in 1983. He leaves a son, James E. Rettie of Pittsfield; a daughter, Alison R. Steinmiller of North Chili, N.Y.; a brother, Stanley Rettie of West Springfield; a sister, Emily Rettie of Agawam, and two grandchildren. Another son, Allan James Rettie, died in 1953. The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 11 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, by the Rev. Robert H. Skidmore, retired pastor. Following cremation, burial will be in Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam at a later date. Calling hours will be Thursday from 10 until the time of the service at the funeral home. A son, Allan James Rettie, died in 1953, and a sister, Jessie Haywood of Chicopee Falls, is deceased. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Life Care, P.O. Box 10428, Holyoke, MA 01040-2028, or to the Holyoke Soldiers' Home, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040, in Mr. Rettie's memory.
