Walter Liszka

Walter Liszka, 87, of 6 School St. died Wednesday evening at home. Born in Putnam, Conn., on Aug. 21, 1918, son of Maciej and Monica Bigosz Liszka, he came to Adams as a child with his family, and attended schools there. An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the engineer battalion in the China-Burma-India Theater. Mr. Liszka was last employed by the former W. R. Grace Co. for 12 years, retiring in 1984. Earlier, he had worked for several years as a bartender at the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society in Adams, and also at G.E. in Pittsfield. He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus' Church and a member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society and the Maple Grove Civic Club. He was a former member of American Legion Post 155 in Dalton. He enjoyed golfing and bowling. In his younger years, he played semi-pro football and was named a Western Mass MVP in baseball. He leaves his wife of 64 years, the former Catherine E. Urus, whom he married Sept. 1, 1941. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Walter Liszka Jr. of Adams; two daughters, Carol Wandrei and Christine Liszka, both of Adams, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by another son, William Liszka. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Walter Liszka will Saturday, Sept. 24, at noon from AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12:30 in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday from 10:30 until noon at the funeral home. He also leaves his daughter-in-law, Dianne; son-in-law, Russell; four grandchildren, Barbara Briggs, Kerry Wandrei, Russell Wandrei II and Jason Wandrei, all of Adams, and three great-grandchildren, Katie McWhirt, Beth McWhirt and Joshua Wandrei, all of Adams. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Liszka, and by four sisters, Stella Belanger, Helen Clairmont, Margaret Greenbush and Hazel French.
