Elsie Carpenter Turner

Elsie Carpenter Turner, 96, of Maple Ave. died Sunday at Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center where she had been a resident for the last 8 years. Born in Austerlitz, N.Y., March 23, 1909, daughter of George and Nellie Bacon Carpenter, she attended schools in New York. With her husband, John S. Turner, she owned and operated the former Cherry Hill Dairy in Stockbridge, on what is now Eden Hill. In the early 1960s, she and her husband moved to New Egypt, N.J.. Mr. Turner died on April 15, 1964. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and she enjoyed sewing and baking. She leaves two daughters, Natalie Abbott and Marjorie Gruen both of Albuquerque, N.M.; and two sons John Turner of New Egypt, N.J., and Leo Turner of Albuquerque. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for the late Elsie Turner will be held on Thursday at 11 at First Congregational Church in Stockbridge with the Rev. Steven Bridges, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Great Barrington. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4 to 7 at FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. She often made baked goods for her grandchildren and had a way to make each one of them feel special. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and an all-around terrific woman who found the most joy in spending time with her family. She was predeceased by her husband, their two daughters, Geraldine Huggins, who died in 1990, and Joan Wheeler, who died in 1998; their son, Eugene Turner, and one grandson, Leo Carpenter Turner, Jr. Donations in memory of Elsie may be made to either the Alzheimer's Association, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association through the funeral home, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
