Walter C. Keefner

Walter C. Keefner, 84, of Christian Hill Road died Saturday at Fairview Commons Nursing Center. Born in Great Barrington on April 3, 1921, son of John and Carrie Race Keefner, he attended the former Searles High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the 507th fighter squadron and attained the rank of corporal. He fought in Normandy, northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, earning several campaign medals. A carpenter, Mr. Keefner was employed by Dick's Builders, retiring in 1985. He also worked for Kane and Melvin Builders. He was a member of James A. Modolo Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8348. His wife, the former Gloria Delmolino, whom he married May 5, 1942, died Oct. 27, 1999. He leaves a daughter, Rose Marie Dolson of Stockbridge; four brothers, Raymond Keefner and Richard M. Keefner, both of Great Barrington, Harold Keefner of Clifton Park, N.Y., and Robert Keefner of Austerlitz, N.Y.; four sisters, Bertha Malally and Patricia Pixley, both of Valatie, N.Y., Sylvia Eichstedt of Great Barrington and Marion Eastman of Springfield, Vt., and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Graveside Funeral Service for Walter C. Keefner, who died Saturday, Oct. 8, will be conducted tomorrow, Oct. 11, 2005, at 1 at Elmwood Cemetery by the Rev. Steven Edmiston. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in Walter's memory be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230, which is in charge of arrangements. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater campaign ribbon, and the Distinguished Unit Badge and Belgian Fourragere Decision. He also leaves his son-in-law, Jim, and two grandchildren, Carrie and Stephanie Dolson. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Charles, and two sisters, Flora Markham and Bessie O'Connell. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
