Leo J. LaFontana

Leo J. LaFontana, 92, of 235 North Plain Road, Housatonic, died Sunday at Fairview Commons Nursing Center. He was a former Great Barrington selectman. Born in Peekskill, N.Y., on Sept. 12, 1913, son of Frank and Lena LaFontana, he was a 1933 graduate of the former Searles High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he was discharged with the rank of sergeant. Mr. Fontana was a town veterans' agent, retiring in 1973. Before that, he was a plumber for Harland Foster, and for Cavanaugh Plumbing and Heating. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, and was a New York Yankees fan. He and his wife, the former Bertha M. Magdalenski, celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary June 6. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Michael LaFontana of Montgomery Center, Vt.; a daughter, Mary LaFontana of Housatonic; three sisters, Marie McNeil of Great Barrington, and Betty Carl and Clementine Fruett, both of Pittsfield, and a granddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Leo J. LaFontana, who died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 10 at All Saints' Church in Housatonic by the Rev. Anthony Jutt, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Bridget's Cemetery. A calling hour will precede the funeral on Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME. Survivors also include a granddaughter, Emery LaFontana of Brooklyn, N.Y. Expressions of sympathy in Leo's memory may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
