Helen M. Halsted, 77, of Marion Avenue, Torrington, Conn., formerly of Great Barrington, died Friday at the University of Connecticut Medical Center in Farmington. Born in Amesville, Conn., on March 19, 1928, daughter of Archibald and Jennie Bell Surdam Barney, she attended schools there and in Lime Rock, Conn., and was a graduate of Housatonic Valley High School, now Housatonic Valley Regional High School. Mrs. Halsted was employed by Hour Glass Cleaners in Waterbury, Conn. Before that, she was a sterilizer in the operating room at Waterbury Hospital, from which she retired. She also had worked at the House of Herbs in Waterbury. She was a member of the Sullivan Senior Center in Torrington. She and her husband, Ernest Halsted, were married Dec. 14, 2002. Besides her husband, she leaves two brothers, Archie Barney of Canaan, Conn., and Robert Barney of Winsted, Conn. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Helen Halsted, who died Oct. 14, 2005, will be conducted Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME at 11 by the Rev. Steven Edmiston. The family will receive friends from 10 until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
