Ralph Philip Macy

Ralph Philip Macy, 80, of Bow Wow Road died yesterday at his home. Born in Sheffield on June 3, 1925, son of Ralph D. and Margaret L. DeVoe Macy, he was a graduate of the former Sheffield Center School and attended the Tufts University School of Aviation for two years. A Navy veteran of World War II, he enlisted July 1, 1943, and served as a flight instructor. Following his honorable discharge on June 30, 1947, he enlisted in the Air Force where he also served as flight instructor. He was honorably retired on June 3, 1985, after attaining the rank of Major. Mr. Macy was the owner of the former Macy's Garage, which he purchased when his father retired. He sold the business in 1988. He then was a school bus driver for Massini Bus Co. until the mid 1990s, and he worked for Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington until retiring in 2003. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, a Mason, and a member of the Cincinnatus Lodge AF & AM in Great Barrington. He served as treasurer for the Town of Sheffield and also served on its planning board. He and his wife, the former Ann Leach, were married Dec. 20, 1950, at Christ Church. She died Aug. 2, 2003. He leaves two sons, David DeVoe Macy of Sheffield, and Daniel Philip Macy of Glen Echo, Md.; a sister, Ann Goodrich of Burlington, Vt., and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Ralph Philip Macy, who died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, will be conducted Tuesday at 11 at Christ Episcopal Church, by the Rev. Ann Ryder. Burial will follow in Sheffield Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 4 to 7 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME.
