Carmalita Benson Scott

Carmalita Benson Scott, 76, of Main Street, a psychologist, teacher and actress, died Sunday at home. Born in Madison, Wis., on March 18, 1929, daughter of Robert and Mary Carmalita Lewis Benson, she lived primarily with her mother in Europe, Florida and California after her parents' divorce. Following her graduation from the University of California, Berkeley, Ms. Scott studied at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, and then joined the Equity acting company of the Wharf Theater in Monterey, Calif. She lived in California and Wisconsin, and traveled widely in Europe before moving to Stockbridge in 1964, where she worked as a leading actress with the Berkshire and Williamstown Theatre Festivals. She also taught acting at several local preparatory schools, including Miss Hall's. In 1973, Ms. Scott joined the Pittsfield public school system as a teacher. Following graduate work in psychology, she worked as a guidance counselor and school psychologist in the Pittsfield schools until her retirement in 2002. Carmalita B. Scott is survived by her husband of 50 years, Walter H. Scott; her daughter, Aurelia Carmalita Scott of Portland, Maine; her son, Hilary S. L. Scott, PhD., of Somerville, Mass., and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A public funeral is not planned for Carmalita Benson Scott, who died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005. The family asks those who wish to make a donation in Carmalita's name to HospiceCare in The Berkshires in care of FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Gt. Barrington, MA 01230, who is in charge of arrangements. Their kindness and care made Carmalita's last months a shared blessing. Her family will always be grateful. She also leaves a son-in-law, Robert E. Krug, PhD.; a daughter-in-law, Gretchen Wehrle Scott, and her two grandchildren, Hannah Aurelia and Gabriel Peter Scott.
