Roderick Pidgeon

Roderick W. "Pidge" Pidgeon, 90, formerly of 43 Harris St., died Saturday at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, Vt., where he had resided since 1997. Born in Fitchburg on Oct. 5, 1910, son of William and Mabel Chisholm Pidgeon, he was a 1928 graduate of the former Dalton High School and attended Duke University in Durham, N.C. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a pharmacist's mate at Sampson, N.Y., and at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Chelsea. Mr. Pidgeon was employed by GE in the tank shop of the power transformer division for 30 years and worked part time as a desk clerk at the Allen Hotel, retiring from both Jan. 1, 1970. Following retirement, he worked in the security department at Berkshire Medical Center and at the former Hilton hotel, now the Crowne Plaza. He was a member of Notre Dame Church and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Dalton. In his younger years, he boxed and enjoyed watching the sport. His wife, the former Anna Mae Augur Garrity, whom he married May 31, 1941, died Aug. 16, 1999. He leaves a stepson, John O. Garrity of Shrewsbury; a step-granddaughter; two step-great-granddaughters, and a step-great-great-granddaughter. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 at Notre Dame Church in Pittsfield by the Rev. Earl Hebert, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Pittsfield. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield. A grandson, John P. Garrity, died in 1996. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either the National World War II Memorial, 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Suite 501, Arlington, VA 22201, the Vermont Veterans Home, 325 North St., Bennington, VT 05201, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
