Veronica C. "Bonnie" Duncan

Veronica C. "Bonnie" Duncan, 77, of 899 South Main St. died Saturday at Fairview Hospital. Born in New York City on May 27, 1928, daughter of Thomas and Mary Hopkins Pickersgill, she moved to Stockbridge at age 15 but soon returned to New York, where she graduated from Cathedral High School. She moved to Great Barrington in 1973. In 1987, she earned a bachelor's degree in social work from Elms College. Mrs. Duncan was employed by the former Willowood Nursing Home as a social worker, retiring in 1995. During the 1940s, she worked at New York Hospital. She started the first detoxification center in Pittsfield in the 1970s at the former Hillcrest Hospital. She also worked at Berkshire Medical Center as a licensed practical nurse until 1983. She was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 33 years and a volunteer at the Great Barrington Senior Center. She also wrote stories for the Women's Times. She and her first husband, Lawrence M. O'Brien, were married in New York in 1944. They were divorced, and he died March 28, 1991. She and her husband, Anson H. Duncan, were married in New York in 1953. He died Sept. 15, 1968. She leaves five sons, James O'Brien of Bella Vista, Ark., Joseph Duncan of Rockton, Ill., Anson H. Duncan of Long Beach, N.Y., John C. Duncan of Altamont, N.Y., and Robert W. Duncan of West Hartford, Conn.; a daughter, Caroline Duncan Borozski of West Stockbridge; 21 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Dianna O'Brien, died in 2001. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Veronica "Bonnie" Duncan, who died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, will be Wednesday at 9 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Peter's Church celebrated by the Rev. Shaun O'Connor, MIC, pastor. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Great Barrington Senior Center, in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
