Emily B. Olsen

Emily B. Olsen, 97, formerly of 54 Alden Ave., died Friday at Hillcrest Commons, where she had resided since July 2002. Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 21, 1908, daughter of Irving and Ellen Morris Rhodes, she was a 1926 graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended Berkshire Community College. Mrs. Olsen was employed by Wallace Co. and Davey Tree Co. She was a member of Pilgrim Memorial Church and of its Philathea Society, and a member of Berkshire Power Squadron. As a poet, some of her poems were collected and published in "An Open Door." She and her husband, Corey J.B. Olsen, were married Aug. 23, 1930. He died Feb. 4, 2004. She leaves a daughter, Emily "Bunni" Ptak of Pittsfield; a son, James A. Olsen of Santa Fe, N.M.; a sister, Janice Bowers of Pittsfield; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Emily B. Olsen, who died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, will be conducted Sunday at 1 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Cory Loder, pastor of Pilgrim Memorial Church. Following cremation, burial will be at a later date in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from noon until the service. She also leaves five grandchildren, Corinne Hagan, Pamela Hanna, Jennifer Brennan, Michael Olsen, Amanda Lowrey and Diana Ermi. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to a charity of the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
