Ruth Elenor Elliott

Ruth Elenor Elliott, 88, formerly of Great Barrington, died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. She had been a resident of Laurel Lake Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Lee since 2000. Born on Aug. 7, 1917 in Tarboro, N.C., daughter of Harvey and Lenora Felton Parker, she attended local schools and, at age 16, went to work at Hart Cotton Mill in Tarboro. She moved to Massachusetts in 1952, first moving to Hartsville and then to Adams. She worked as a supervisor in the cafeteria and coffee shop at North Adams Regional Hospital for many years. She later moved to Great Barrington, where she was employed as a private-duty nurse for several local families. She eventually went to work at the former Pines Nursing Home, now Timberlyn Heights Nursing Home, where she worked for several years. She also volunteered at the former Great Barrington Healthcare, now the Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, and was active at the Claire Teague Senior Center. When she could no longer live on her own, she moved to the former Willowood Nursing Home, now Fairview Commons. She later moved to the Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where she enjoyed regularly attending church services and "sing alongs" in the chapel and would sing solos for the other residents. In 2000, she moved to Laurel Lake. In addition to singing, she enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and spending time with her family. She leaves two daughters, Kitty A. Hastedt of Culpepper, Va. and Alice Kay Robbins of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Joseph Parker of New York Mills, N.Y.; three sisters, Irene Senter of Jacksonville, Fla., Mary Elizabeth Farrell of Wilson, N.C., and Margaret Ann Meeks of Tarboro, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, the Rev. Roland Tew, who died Nov. 29, 2003, and by two brothers, Thomas Parker and Robert Allen Parker. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral Services for the late Ruth E. Elliott, who died Jan. 12, 2006, will be held Monday at 4 at FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, conducted by the Rev. Alan Macy. A burial service will be held in the spring at a time to be announced at Corashire Cemetery in Monterey. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 2 until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to either the American Lung Association or the American Arthritis Foundation in care of the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
