Robert Earl Darling

Robert Earl Darling, 71, of 648 State Road died yesterday morning at his home. Born in North Adams on March 13, 1934, son of Delbert E. and Dorothy Osborne Darling, he attended schools in North Adams, including Drury High School. Mr. Darling was a carpenter and worked for various contractors throughout the area. He was last employed by Bump & McAlpine Contractors. Following his retirement, he was employed part-time by the Waubeeka Golf Links. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in North Adams. He enjoyed playing golf, and was a former member of Waubeeka Golf Links. He leaves his wife and best friend of 54 years, the former Patricia Anne Baker, whom he married on April 19, 1952, in Pownal, Vt. He also leaves two daughters, Deborah Darling St. Pierre of Stamford, Vt., and Dale Marie Thompson of North Adams; four sons, Daniel E. Darling of Springfield, Vt., Darrel R. Darling of Whittier, Calif., Dwayne A. Darling of North Adams and Dereck O. Darling of Adams; a sister, Marjorie McLain of Williamstown, a brother, William E. Darling of Pownal, Vt; 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Dana E. Darling, who died in 1970. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A funeral to celebrate the life of Robert Earl Darling, who died Jan. 18, 2006, will be held Saturday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, North Adams, with the Rev. Joseph DeCosta, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Calling hours are Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS CENTRAL CHAPELS. Donations in his name may be made to First Baptist Church Youth Fund, c/o David Anderson, 131 Main St. North Adams, MA 01247. Survivors include two sons-in-law, Gene St. Pierre and Butch Thompson; four daughters-in-law, Marlene, Penney, Sue and Kariann, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Dana E. Darling, who died in 1970. He was also predeceased by five sisters and two brothers. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and died surrounded by his loved ones.
