Richard Henry Frew Sr.

Richard Henry Frew Sr., 52, of 196 Phelps Ave. died yesterday at home from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig disease. Born in Walpole on Sept. 19, 1953, son of the late Henry M. and Gladys Briggs Frew, he was a 1971 graduate of Walpole High School. Mr. Frew was employed by former New England Telephone Co. in Framingham before being transferred to North Adams in 1976. He retired from its successor, Verizon Co., in 1997. Before that, he played semiprofessional hockey for several years and was employed by various automotive companies, all in the Boston area. He enjoyed driving and repairing anything with a motor, including two-wheeled motorcycles, his 1968 Ford Mustang, which he raced, and his 3/4-ton 1977 Ford pickup. He also enjoyed fishing and camping. He and his wife, the former Susan Fielding, would have celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary April 26. They were married in North Adams. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Bridget Herman of Hancock; a son, Richard H. "L.R." Frew Jr. of North Adams; a brother, Henry Frew of Danville, Pa., and a sister, Barbara Frew of Holley, N.Y. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of Richard Henry Frew Sr., who died Jan. 27, 2006, will be conducted Wednesday at 11 in Fellowship Hall at First Congregational Church of North Adams by the Rev. Jill Graham, pastor. Burial will be Thursday in Rural Cemetery in Walpole. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Richard Henry Frew Jr. Education Fund, to First Congregational Church of North Adams or to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire Inc. through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Funeral HOME, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247. He leaves a sister-in-law, Linda Frew, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Sandy Frew. He died with his wife, Susan, and Donna Garner, his caregiver, by his side in the care of Northern Berkshire Hospice.
