Leo E. Ethier

Leo E. Ethier, 59, of 1287 Main Road died Wednesday at North Adams (Mass.) Regional Hospital. Born in Milford, Mass., on Feb. 8, 1947, son of the late Edgar and Lea LaPierre Ethier, he attended schools in Milford and graduated from the Nipmuc Regional High School with the class of 1964. He then obtained a bachelor of arts in history with a minor in elementary education followed by a master's degree in education/administration from the former North Adams State College. Mr. Ethier was principal and teacher of the Stamford Elementary School from 1972 until the time of his death. Prior to that, from 1968 to 1972, Mr. Ethier taught all subjects in a self-contained classroom for the combined 5th through 8th grades. He was a communicant of St. John Bosco Church. He was a member of the Vermont Principals Association, the Chairman of the Regional Standards Board of Principals and a member of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development both nationally and for the state of Vermont. He was a longtime member of the Stamford Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as an officer for 21 years and as Chief of the Department for four and one-half years, and he was voted honorary chief at the last fire department meeting. He was also the Assistant Civil Defense Director in Stamford. He also was a member and past board member of the North Adams Country Club, where he won four senior club championships. He also recorded four holes-in-one at several courses. An Eagle Scout, he was a former cub scout leader in Stamford, a member of the Stamford Computer Club, the Stamford Community Library Planning Committee, and the Boat Barn Club. He leaves his wife of 36 years, the former Carol Ann Contois, whom he married on June 21, 1969, in Notre Dame Church in North Adams. He also leaves two sons, Paul Ethier of Clarksburg, Mass., and Glenn Ethier of North Adams, and a brother, Raymond Ethier of Upton, Mass. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Leo E. Ethier, who died Wed., Feb. 8, 2006, will take place Saturday, Feb. 11, at 8:45 a.m. at FLYNN-DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Francis' Church, North Adams. Burial will follow at the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams, Mass. Calling hours will be at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Leo E. Ethier Scholarship fund through the funeral home. Survivors include two daughters-in-law, Linda Ethier and Jennifer Macksey Ethier.
