Sidney Mishcon

Sidney Mishcon, 88, of Long Boat Key, Fla., and Great Barrington died Wednesday at Fairview Hospital. Born July 5, 1917, in New York, son of Samuel and Anna Frey Mishcon, he graduated from Erasmus High School in New York in 1934 and from the University of Pennsylvania in 1938. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a linguist, learning Japanese. He was vice president of the Singer Corp. for many years. He retired in 1975 and moved to the state of Florida and Washington, Conn., before moving from Washington to Great Barrington in 1998. While in Washington, he was a columnist for the Litchfield County Times for many years. A golfer, he was at one time club champion of the Glen Head Country Club in Glen Head, Long Island, and he also wrote a golf self-help book under a pen name, Sandy McTavish. He was a patron of the arts, sponsoring the Sarasota Opera Company in Sarasota, Fla. He leaves his wife, the former Mimi Robins, whom he married on Dec. 11, 1963, in Jamaica Estates, N.Y. He also leaves two sons, Dr. Arnold Mishcon of Hollywood, Fla., and Dr. M. Jonathan Mishcon of Andover, N.H.; three daughters, Melissa Mishcon of Monterey, Judy Mishcon of North Miami, Fla., and June Mishcon Kleinfeld of Aventura, Fla., and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Andrew Mishcon, who died in 1983. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Sidney Mishcon, who died Feb. 22, 2006, will be held Thursday at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, Great Barrington, at 12:30 p.m., with the Rabbi Andrew Klein of Hevreh South Berkshire officiating. Burial will follow at Ahavath Shalom Cemetery in Great Barrington. The family will receive friends for Shiva for seven nights commencing on Thursday. Donations in Sidney's memory may be made to Fairview Hospital in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230-1815. He also leaves two daughters-in-law, Lori and Victoria Mishcon; a son-in-law, Charles Ferris (Melissa), and seven grandchildren, Alyssa, Lindsay, Hillary, Sam, Harrison, Jacklene, and Buddy.
