Gertrude LeGeyt

Gertrude LeGeyt, 94, of LeGeyt Road died at home on Thursday. Born in Sheffield on Feb. 23, 1912, daughter of John and Anna Clark Huggins, she attended the former Brush Schoolhouse and graduated from the former Sheffield High School with the class of 1930. She then attended and graduated from the Hartford Training School for Nurses with the class of 1933. She and her husband operated Tobey Hill Farm, which her son now operates. Prior to her marriage, she was the only night nurse at the former Robert C. Geer Memorial Hospital in Canaan, Conn. While working, she enjoyed tending the calves and feeding the animals. She was a member of the Sheffield Grange 224, Berkshire South Pomona Grange and the Sate National Grange. She was also on the board of the Sheffield Cemetery Association. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Ashley Falls where she served on many committees. She was also a member of the Historical Society Quilting Group. Her husband, Edwin S. LeGeyt, whom she married on Oct. 6, 1934, died June 10, 1976. She leaves her son, Richard H. LeGeyt of Sheffield daughter, Helen L. Roberts of Clinton, Conn.; seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Gertrude LeGeyt, who died Thursday, March 9, 2006, will be at Trinity United Methodist Church on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at 1 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Betty LeGeyt. Burial will take place at the Sheffield Center Cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends Monday, March 13, 2006 from 4 to 7 p.m. and the FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. Donations may be made to the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. She leaves seven grandchildren, Susan, Philip and Karen LeGeyt, Lesley McLoughlin, Donna Dione, Beth Burzynski and Sandra Roberts, and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Vera Conklin of Sheffield.
