Harry MacWhinnie

Harry MacWhinnie, 95, of Devonshire Estates, died Thursday afternoon at Kimball Farms Nursing Care Center, where he had resided since March 1. Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 19, 1910, son of the late David and Isabelle MacDonald MacWhinnie, he was educated in Pittsfield schools. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. MacWhinnie worked for the city of Pittsfield as a custodian for the Pittsfield Police Department from 1971 until his retirement in 1973. Prior to that he was employed as a serviceman for Conry Brothers in Pittsfield from 1950 to 1970. Before returning to the Berkshires, he lived in St. Petersburg, Fla., for 20 years. He was a former member of Pilgrim Memorial Church. Mr. MacWhinnie had a special interest in youth baseball, and was very active in North Little League, where he served as past president, treasurer and coach. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and the Red Sox, as well as traveling and dancing with his wife. He leaves his wife, the former Norma Zanconato Brown, whom he married Nov. 26, 1966, in Lebanon, N.Y. His previous wife, the late Helen Miller Delamarter, died in 1966. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Donald and Gerald A. MacWhinnie of Pittsfield and Richard A. MacWhinnie of Lenox; a daughter, June Gibbons of Lenox; three stepsons, Leonard J. Brown of West Lebanon, N.Y., Robert J. Brown of Pittsfield, and David B. Brown of Oswego, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Harry E. MacWhinnie, who died Oct. 15, 2002. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Harry MacWhinnie, who died Thursday, March 9, 2006, will be held Monday, March 13, at noon at DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield, conducted by the Rev. Eric Dupee, pastor of United Methodist Church of Lenox. Calling hours will be held Monday from 11 a.m. to noon prior to the service at the funeral home. A private graveside service will be held at Pittsfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. MacWhinnie may be made to the Lenox Volunteer Ambulance Squad or to the Lenox Fire Department both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield, MA 01201.
