Rev. Robert H. Cummings

The Rev. Robert H. Cummings, 84, of 203 Summit Ave., Plainfield, died Tuesday morning in his home following a long illness. Formerly, he served St. Mark's Church of Adams. Born in Beverly on March 7, 1922, son of Ralph Brewer and Mildred Hanson Cummings, he attended Melrose Public Schools and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1941. The Rev. Cummings enlisted in the U.S. Army at the beginning of World War II, participating in campaigns in North Africa and Europe. He was discharged as a first lieutenant and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism. He entered the Berkeley Divinity School in New Haven, Conn., graduating in 1951 and becoming a deacon June 17, 1951. He was ordained an Episcopal priest Dec. 21, 1951, by Bishop William Appleton Lawrence. He was the pastor of St. Mark's Church, where he served until his retirement on Dec. 27, 1987, establishing a residency in Plainfield. Previously, he served St. Christopher's Church of Fairview and Grace Church in Chicopee. He is survived by two nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A vigil for the Rev. Robert H. Cummings, who died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, will be held Wednesday, March 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Mark's Church in Adams. A Burial Mass will be said by the Right Rev. Bishop Gordon P. Scruton Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Western Mass, on Thursday at 2 p.m. in St. Mark's Church. Burial will follow later in the spring in the Summit Street Cemetery, Plainfield, arranged by MCBRIDE FUNERAL SERVICES. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory my be made to St. Mark's Church of Adams, P.O. Box 191, Adams, MA 01220. He leaves two nephews, David II. Leigh of Menominee Falls, Wis., and T. Steven Leigh of Seattle, Wash.
