Floyd W. Curtiss Sr.

Floyd W. Curtiss Sr., 85, of State Road died Wednesday at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield. Born in Egremont on July 16, 1920, son of John and Lena Funk Curtiss, he attended the two-room schoolhouse there. He moved to Great Barrington in 1951. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Northern Solomon Islands and was awarded several campaign medals. Mr. Curtiss was a taxi and bus driver for Nalty Taxi & Bus Co. and did janitorial work at several local banks. After retiring in 1985, he began Curt's Lawn Service, repairing lawn mowers. He enjoyed nature and gardening. During the holidays, he made and sold Christmas wreaths as a family project; during the summer, he and his family traveled to Mount Greylock to pick blueberries, which they sold. He and his wife, the former Eleanor Koncelick, would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary June 2.They were married in New York. Besides his wife, he leaves a son Floyd W. Curtiss Jr. of Great Barrington; two daughters, Helen Moening of Pittsfield and Ann Whipple of Aurora, Colo.; two stepsons, Lewis Barnum of Lee and Donald Barnum of Salisbury, Conn.; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Theresa Lee Barnum. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Calling hours for Floyd W. Curtiss, who died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be conducted Monday at 2 at the funeral home by the Rev. Jill Graham. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He was predeceased by three brothers, Harold, Emil and John Curtiss, and by a sister, Marjorie Curtiss.
