Philip J. Gardner Sr.

Philip J. Gardner Sr., 61, of 16 West Mountain Road died Saturday at North Adams Regional Hospital after suffering a heart attack at home. Born in Hynesburg, Vt., on Sept. 16, 1944, son of the late Arthur W. and Victoria Urban Gardner, he moved to Adams as a child and attended Renfrew Grammar School and C.T. Plunkett Junior High School. He was employed by the town of Adams for 19 years in the Highway and Cemetery departments, retiring in 1993 after becoming disabled. Before that, he was employed by the former Arnold Print Works and Dodge Construction Co. He also operated a small-engine repair shop. He was a member of the Catholic Parishes of Adams and a communicant of Notre Dame Church. He was also a member of Adams Lodge 1335 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and the Mountain and Maple Grove Civic clubs. He enjoyed woodworking and auto repair. He and his wife, the former Bonnie L. Walden, were married in 1966. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Anne Marie Burzimatti of North Adams; two sons, William J. Gardner Sr. of Adams and Philip J. Gardner Jr. of North Adams, and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Philip J. Gardner Sr., who died Saturday, March 25, 2006, will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 at Notre Dame Church. Burial will follow in the family plot in Bellevue Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME. The family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Fund in care of the funeral home, 6 Liberty St., Adams, 01220. Mr. Gardner leaves three grandchildren, William Jr., Joshua and Christopher Gardner, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Fisher, and by two brothers, Arthur and Frederick Gardner.
