Mary A. Giarolo

Mary A. Giarolo, 100, of 20 Lois St. died Saturday at home. She was the holder of the Boston Post Cane, which was presented to her on Nov. 18, 2002. Born in Montebello, Italy, on Oct. 3, 1905, daughter of Ottavio and Lucia Dalla Grana Biasin, she immigrated to Lee when she was a child and was educated in Lee schools. Mrs. Giarolo worked as a cook for the Sisters of St. Joseph . From 1959 to 1970, she was a sorter at Hurlbut Paper Co. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of its former St. Mary-St. Martha Sodality, and worked for many years in the school kitchen for its bingo games. She was also a member of the Lee Senior Citizens and enjoyed playing cards. Her husband, Mario Giarolo, whom she married Aug. 5, 1925, died Jan. 3, 1959. She leaves two daughters, Mary L. Salice and Linda M. Winters, both of Lee; a son, John B. Giarolo, of Lee; 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Ottavio Giarolo. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mary Giarolo, who died Saturday, March 25, 2006, will be Tuesday at 9:15 from KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mary's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to St. Mary's School Library, Lee Fire Company or HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238. Mrs. Giarolo also leaves two daughters-in-law, Toni and Vera Giarolo, and a son-in-law, Jack Winters. She was predeceased by two sisters, Edith Santolin and Angelina Wheeler, by two brothers, Dominic and Leon, and by a son-in-law, Victor Salice. She enjoyed cooking Italian food for her family.
