ELIZABETH ATWATER COPITHORNE

Elizabeth Atwater Copithorne, 76, of 16 Hill Road, died on Friday at home after a long illness. Born in West Medford, MA, on Sept. 10, 1924, daughter of Harry and Louise Atwater, she graduated from Medford High School in 1941 and from Tufts University ,in 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. Active in the arts and literature, in the 1940s she was editor of The Beacon Press Publishing Company in Boston. On June 28, 1947, she married William L. Copithorne, a teacher and writer who subsequently had a career in business. While raising a family, she did occasional editorial consulting work for non-fiction authors and was a successful water colorist whose work was shown in community galleries in New York. She was active in community and volunteer work. While living in New York in the 1970s and 1980s, she taught reading and English language skills to foreign students with the Literacy Volunteers. After moving from New York to Stockbridge in 1992, she joined the First Congregational Church of Stockbridge. In 1998, she served on the Board of Trustees of the church, and she was a contributor to and regular participant in the annual Holly Fair and Rummage Sale. She was a member of the Tuesday Club, a well-known women’s service organization in Stockbridge, serving a term as Treasurer of the club. She was also an avid golfer and an active member of the Stockbridge Golf Club. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons., Robert S. Copithorne of Lake Forest, IL, and David A. Copithorne of Newton. MA; a brother, George Atwater of West Medford, MA, a sister, Virginia Crusius, of Andover. Mass, and five grandchildren, David, Peter, Susan, Jacob and Alexis Copithorne. Another brother, Harry Atwater, Jr., predeased her. Funeral services for Elizabeth Atwater Copithorne, will be held on Wednesday December 27th, at the First Congregational Church of Stockbridge at 11:30 AM.
