Richard David Powers

Richard David Powers, 66, of 81 Maple St. died at home Monday night. Born in Pittsfield on March 25, 1940, son of Joseph R. and Dolores H. LaMudge Powers, he was a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph Central High School, where he was an award-winning basketball player. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1966. Mr. Powers had been employed in retail hardware for forty years. He operated Hinsdale Hardware, a division of L.P. Adams, since its inception, including planning phases for the store, retiring in 1997. Previously, he had been employed by Carr Hardware & Supply Company Inc. for 30 years. He was active in town politics, serving on the Finance Committee, and was a forming member of Hinsdale's M.I.N.E. Committee. He took interest in town history and artifacts, served as a police officer, was a member of the Hinsdale Athletic Committee, and coached Little League. He orchestrated local fundraising events for those in need. His interest in politics extended to world affairs, which he enjoyed reading about in the Berkshire Eagle every morning with a cup of tea. He was enthusiastic about attending Boston Red Sox games and Boston Pops concerts, and traveling. He also enjoyed golf, fishing and taking nature photos, and enjoyed his Irish heritage, and especially being with his grandsons. He and his wife, the former Andrea T. Allard, were married Sept. 23, 1961. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Kellie Powers Meisl of Pittsfield and Colleen Powers of Harrisville, N.H.; a son, Richard C. Powers of Pittsfield; a brother, Joseph B. Powers of Pittsfield; a sister, Helen Powers French of West Warwick, and three grandsons. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Richard D. Powers, who died Monday, March 27, 2006, leaves his son-in-law Stephen; his daughters-in-law, Marcia and Lisa, and his grandsons, Christopher, Benjamin and Nicholas. He was predeceased by two sisters, Connie Dean and Mary Mason, and a brother, Edward Powers. Private funeral services for Mr. Powers were held yesterday. A Father's Day Remembrance will be held Sunday, June 18, 9:15 a.m., at St. Charles' Church with the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Powers may be made to the Catholic Youth Center in care of DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
