James H. Urquhart Jr.

James H. Urquhart Jr., 78, of Gator Trace Avenue, Fort Pierce, died Monday at home. He was a native of Adams, formerly residing on Richmond Lane. Born in Adams on June 20, 1927, son of James H. Urquhart Sr. and Anne M. Weaver Urquhart, he was educated in the Adams schools and was a 1947 graduate of the former Adams High School. Mr. Urquhart also took the General Electric Apprentice Courses and classes at the former North Adams State College. During high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from June 1945 to Aug. 1946, and was honorably discharged from the Boston Navy Yard facility. He returned to high school after his discharge and graduated in 1947. He was employed by the radio station WMNB as a sports announcer. He was a management specialist for General Electric for 42 years. He was a communicant of St. Thomas Church. He was a member of the Adams Draft Board, a member and chairman of the Adams School Committee, and Adams' representative on the Northern Berkshire Voc/Ed District School Committee and was instrumental in forging the school's goals when the committee was organized. He belonged to the G.E. Quarter Century Club, the Council 230 K of C and the Adams Post 160 American Legion. He was active in the Adams Little League, a co-founder of the Adams Police Athletic League, a founder and organizer of the Adams Youth Center, and a member of the Adams Town Democratic Committee, and was a delegate to several Democratic state conventions. In Florida, he was a member and former President of the Condominium Association at Gator Trace. He and his wife, the former Nancy Walker, were married Nov. 10, 1951, at St. Thomas Church by the Rev. James Lahui, in Adams. They relocated to Florida several years ago. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Susan Ann Martel of Adams; two sisters, Ann Marie Griswold and Patricia Ann Alibozek, both of Adams, and a granddaughter. He was predeceased by a son, William J. Urquhart. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A libera service in the Roman Catholic Tradition will be offered in the celebration of the life of James H. Urquhart, who died Monday, April 3, 2006; the service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 10 a.m., from MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, in Adams, with the Rev. Gerald F. McAndrews, SJ, officiating. The family will greet friends from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, prior to the service. Mr. Urquhart also leaves a son-in-law, David; two brothers-in-law, Gary and Frances; a granddaughter, Sara, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Lt. William C. and Robert F. Urquhart.
