Arthur Peter Phillips

Arthur Peter Phillips, 79, of County Road died Tuesday at St. Peter's Medical Center in Albany. Born in Pittsfield on March 1, 1927, son of Ernest and Beatrice Barnum Phillips, he grew up in Monterey. He worked on the family farm, the Barnum Farm, for many years, and attended the former Corashire School in Monterey and the former Searles High School in Great Barrington, and was a 1945 graduate of the former Lenox Prep School. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Phillips first enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 27, 1945, and was honorably discharged on November 7, 1945. The following day, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served until being honorably discharged on November 7, 1948, having earned the rank of sergeant. Upon his arrival home, he entered the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts, graduating in 1951. Mr. Phillips retired from Beckton Dickinson in Canaan, Conn., where he worked as an operating engineer for a number of years. He was also employed by the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 98. Previously, he was a postmaster in Monterey and a member of the James A. Modolo VFW post 8348 in Great Barrington. He leaves his wife of nearly forty years, the former Judith Wells. The couple married on July 29, 1966, in Hillsdale, N.Y. He also leaves four sons, Mark H. Phillips of Pittsfield, Stephen M. Phillips of Newcastle, Ontario, Canada, and David Ivy and Gary Ivy, both of Idaho; three daughters, Nancy E. Phillips of Sheffield, Roxanne Neal and Susan Higley, both of Nevada; his sister, Judith Tauer of Pittsfield; three grandsons, and a granddaughter. He was predeceased by a daughter Kathleen Phillips who died on December 27, 1956. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Arthur Peter Phillips, who died Tuesday, May 2, 2006, will be held on Friday, May 5, at 11 a.m. at FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington, conducted by the Rev. Charles VanAusdall, pastor of the First Congregational Church in Great Barrington. Military burial honors will be presented following the committal service at Corashire Cemetery in Monterey. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 4, 2006, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230. He also leaves three grandsons, Eric and Benjamin Schibi and Bradyn Phillips; one granddaughter, Lauren Phillips, and two daughters-in-law, Tracy and Melissa Phillips.
