Frances L. Sandgren

Frances L. Sandgren, 96, died Thursday at Fairview Commons Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since Feb. 18, 1997. Born in Great Barrington on Aug. 3, 1909, daughter of Will B. and Helena Scott Leonard, she was a lifelong resident of Great Barrington. She attended both the former Bryant School and Searles High School. In 1927, she entered St. Margaret's Home & Hospital in Albany, N.Y., to train as a baby nurse and she graduated in 1928. In her family, Mrs. Sandgren was the last of her generation, outliving all her contemporaries. She and her husband, Van Buren Sandgren, were married Sept. 27, 1946. He died in September 1976. She leaves a son, Leonard Sandgren of Mebres, N.M.; a stepson, Van Buren Sandgren Jr. of Lady Lake, Fla.; two grandsons; 9 step-grandchildren, and many step-great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Frances Leonard Sandgren, who died Thursday, May 4, 2006, will be held at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Sheffield on Sunday, May 14, at 3 p.m., with Tenney Fales presiding. After cremation, burial will follow at the family plot in Mahaiwe Cemetery. She also leaves two grandsons, Leo of Derring, N.M., and Rion of Utah. She was predeceased by a twin sister, Marion Fitzpatrick of Springfield, Ill., on Nov. 3, 1988, a brother, William Leonard of Canaan, Conn., on July 30, 1960, and a step-grandson, Jerry Sandgren of Springfield in May of 1963.
